Preparing to enroll your teen in driving school can be both exciting and a little nerve-racking. By choosing a reputable driving school, however, you can have a little more confidence and peace of mind as your child prepares to get behind the wheel for the first time. Not sure where to begin when it comes to selecting a driving school? Most parents don't. The good news is that by asking a few questions of a prospective driving school, you can feel great about your final decision.
How Much Hands-On Instruction Do You Offer?
Most driving schools will be broken up into formal classroom instruction and hands-on time practicing behind the wheel. Ideally, your teen should be getting as much time training behind the wheel as possible. Be sure to find out exactly how many hours per week your teen will be expected to be in the classroom versus how many practice hours will be logged (and how they'll be tracked).
What Kind of Schedule Do You Keep?
Choosing a driving school with a schedule that works around your schedule is important, especially for parents who work full-time. Some schools offer classes and training during the week, whereas others may be weekends-only to suit your needs.
Do You Offer a Pick-Up Service?
If you're worried about finding time to drop your teen off at driving school when your schedule is already hectic enough, look for a driving school that offers pick-up services. Some driving instructors will actually pick your teen up from your home, giving your child the opportunity to get some practice time in on the way to and from class. You may have to pay extra for this service, though, so be sure to ask.
Can You Share Your Pass Rate?
At the end of your teen's driving school enrollment, he or she will most likely be taking a formal road test through your state's licensing department. Don't hesitate to ask a prospective driving school if they know what their pass rate is. The higher, the better. After all, the last thing you want is to spend your hard-earned money on putting your child through driving school only to have them fail their exam. Some schools may offer free remediation for students who don't pass their formal road tests, so consider asking about this for added peace of mind.
